What Goes In a Blog and Why Should I Have One?

What goes into a blog post?

Helpful stuff.

  • Stuff that you don’t know but that you’re researching and learning about. A blog is a great learning tool.
  • Stuff you know that you don’t really think about until someone else says, “Oh, Wow! I didn’t know that.”
  • Stuff that matters to you, your family and friends and sometimes those same things matter to total strangers.

That’s one of the cool things about blogs.

The same goes for your business. Your company’s blog posts add a touch of humanity to your business. Show how your products and services provide a solution to your customer’s problem.

If you’re in a specific industry, you’ll want your readers to take away useful tips that illustrate your expertise within that industry. Be helpful and present the info to your ‘customer’ in a way they can relate to.

If you’re an mechanic talking to a doctor about fuel pumps, Try something like, “Well Doc, your car’s arteries are blocked.” If you’re a doctor and your mechanic comes in . . . well, you get the idea.

Yeah, it may sound a bit simplistic, but it usually works. People appreciate stuff like that. They remember you and are more likely to return for future services.

Why Should I Have a Blog?

Great question.

  • If you’re anything like most folks, you know just enough about some things to be dangerous. A blog is a great place to jot down what you think you know, check your facts, and cite your resources.
  • There’s bound to be something you’re interested in, but that you don’t know much about. Jot your questions down on a blog entry and begin researching. Summarize what you’re learning (cite the webpage as the source). If you ever need that info again, it’s on your blog. Others will find it useful too. A blog is a great learning tool.
  • You know stuff that you don’t really think about knowing until you’re visiting with someone who says, “Oh, Wow! I didn’t know that.” It’s a great way to share some of that not-so-useless ‘trivia’.
  • You’ve “Been There and Done That”. The things that matter to you, your family and friends are the same things that matters to total strangers too.

Stop and think about it. What do most of us do when we need to know something? We search the internet for info. We read a blog post written by somebody who’s “been there and done that”.

That’s one of the cool things about blogs.

Yeah, it may sound a bit simplistic, but it usually works. People appreciate stuff like that.

They’ll remember you and are more likely to bookmark and share your page.
